John Patrick began debating in 2004 and won the 2006 US Universities National Open Debate Championship with Josh Martin. In addition, he won the 2007 Pan Pacific Debate Championship, as well as placing at multiple regional and national tournaments and championships over the years. In 2008 he began his career as a professional debate coach when he landed a coaching position at California State University, Fullerton while he was in grad school. While he was reading for his doctorate at the University of La Verne, he coached the La Verne Debate Team to multiple national and international titles. In 2013, after receiving his doctorate in leadership, he took a position as the assistant director of the nationally and internationally successful Cal Poly Debate Team at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. He is one of the founding advisors of the US Universities Debate Association and founder of the US Universities Western Region Debate Championship and The California Cup.
Josh Martin has over 15 years of debating experience, competing, educating and organizing at the highest levels. Starting as a competitive debater, he was the best speaker in the country in 2005 and won the US Universities National Debating Championships in 2007. Since then, he has been the highest rated judge at the National Championships 3 separate years and been selected to judge the Grand Final a record 6 times. Internationally, he has been selected as a senior judge at dozens of competitions, including the World Universities Debating Championships on 6 occasions, the Oxford and Cambridge IVs, Yale IV, FLTRP Chinese National Championships, Hong Kong Debate Open, Global Youth Forum, and Pan American Universities Debating Championships. Josh now focuses on training high school and collegiate students across the globe, bringing with him his experience of working with debaters on 5 different continents in countries including England, Turkey, India, Thailand, Botswana and Jamaica.
